If you have been looking for a way to control access around Kanban board customization – unfortunately there wasn't anything in TFS 2012. Any team member could change the columns.

However, TFS 2013 comes with a new TFS group "Team Administrator".

With TFS 2013 RC or TFS Service, if you are a contributor and try to customize Kanban columns, you will see below message

Ask your administrator to provide you membership in "Team Administrator" group

Here are simple 4 steps for your admin

  1. Navigate to your Team's admin page
  2. Click on "Add" under "Administrators"
  3. Search the user
  4. Save changes

This will enable the "Team Administrator" to be self-sufficient with additional capabilities to all team-related activities such as add another team administrator, manage team room permissions, manage team members and manage team favorites.
