Could you imagine learning and teaching through an event that was streamed live? “On February 16, 2015, over 3,000 medical students and professionals tuned in to the world’s first 24-Hour Live Worldwide Robotic Surgery Event (WRSE), powered by Microsoft Azure Media Services.” Through Microsoft Azure Media Services, the event, (the first of its kind) was able to be delivered without surgeons needing to travel, while providing invaluable learning to medical professionals and students. The event was streamed in real-time from ten premier robotic surgery centers of excellence, from 4 continents and for 24 continuous hours. “The day’s events were delivered through Microsoft’s partner technology LiveArena and LiveArena® Publisher™, which lets users manage and distribute live and on-demand video using Microsoft’s Azure Media Services.”
In the past, to carry out these events were risky, expensive, and “required surgeons performing complex procedures in unfamiliar environments. By streaming the event live, this was able to reduce the cost of the event significantly, and provided more students the ability to watch. Although the event was broadcast live, by using Microsoft Azure Media Services Cloud Digital Video Recorder (DVR) capabilities, this permitted viewers to pause or rewind.
