We are excited that Visual Studio 2017 will be launching on March 7th and we’re excited for this release because of features like the new Git enhancements and live unit testing, just to name a few. Along with the 2017 launch, Visual Studio will be turning 20! It was 20 years ago, on January 28, 1997 that Microsoft announced they were going to launch Visual Studio 97. As Julia Liuson, Corporate Vice President of Visual Studio states on her blog titled “Join Us: Visual Studio 2017 Launch Event and 20th Anniversary, Visual Studio 97 [was] a single product that would bring together best-of-breed productivity tools for any developer.” This task wasn’t a minor undertaking. As Liuson also goes on to explain that “it was a challenging task to bring Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual J++, Visual FoxPro, and Visual InterDev into one single product.

Visual Studio evolved over the years from an integrated development environment (IDE) to a suite of services and products, including but not limited to Visual Studio Code, Team Foundation Server, and Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS). The suite of Visual Studio products spans across platforms; therefore, allowing developers to build mobile-first, cloud-first apps that encompass Windows, Android, iOS, MacOS, and Linux. Visual Studio also provides top industry tooling for DevOps practices across all types of projects whether they are hosted on-premises, on Microsoft Azure, or somewhere in-between.
